Safe
I dive in front of her,
leaping,
desperately
trying to intercede.
Just a bit further.
•
It hits me—
center chest.
The air leaves me.
Followed by
unimaginable pain.
•
I’m bleeding out,
but she is safe.
I would make
this choice
every time.
•
It may have
been my last act
of love.
But it was
worth it.
•
I turn to say goodbye.
•
She holsters the gun
and turns
to walk away.
